Five years and nine months after a 26-year-old Benson Obode was arrested and murdered by five police officers attached to the now-disbanded special anti-robbery squad SARS, justice has finally been served on one of the killers of late Benin based car dealer.
Justice Ohimai Ovbiagele of the criminal division of the Edo state High court sitting in Benin city sentenced one of the culprits who has already been dismissed from the police Force over this same incident to death by hanging over murder, conspiracy, and stealing while the four others connected in the case are currently on the run.
May 2015, the late Benson Obode was arrested by the men of the Nigeria police force attached to the now disbanded anti robbery squad SARS, late Benson was said to have been listed among a gang who allegedly stoled a car in Lagos.
Upon his arrest, Late benson Obode was said to have Been tortured and subsequently murdered by the five SARS officers.
According to the counsel for the Obode’s family who has been following up the case to ensure justice for the family said, the SARS officers after killing the late Benson Obode deposited his corpse with an unknown name in a mutuary in Benin city. thereafter took his Atm card and withdrew the money in the account of their victim.
While the case was before a criminal court in Benin city, the elder brother of the deceased and the family lawyer also filed a case before the Edo state judicial panel of inquiry on police brutality.
Six years and nine months after the 26-years-old car dealer was killed, Justice Ohimai Ovbiagele, of the criminal division of the Edo state high court found one of the defendants guilty of murder, conspiracy and stealing sentenced him to death by hanging, while the four others are currently on the run, they escaped from the Benin correction service facility during the jailbreak as a result of the Endsars protest.
