Shell launches Arbitration Proceedings against Nigeria's Government

The Royal Dutch Shell Plc has filed an arbitration case at the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes against the Federal Republic of Nigeria after unsuccessful efforts to reverse a court order demanding the sun of close to half a billion dollars ($479 million) in compensation to Niger Delta host communities over pollution.

Shell is currently refuting responsibility for the Oil SPill in the region that has lasted for decades and impacted the resident’s quality of lives negatively.

In a statement signed by the Legal representative of the oil conglomerate in Nigeria, Shell disclosed that the organization is seeking protection of its legal rights from an internatonal tribunal.

Shell claims that the Oil Spill which close to 50 years back was due to sabotage by third parties during the civil war and tha the affected sites have been cleaned up.
