Teachers in Edo state have withdrawn their services in strike action to demand better welfare and payment for due entitlements from the State government.

The teachers under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT said the strike action became necessary after several overtures to the state government to meet their demands, among which is unpaid promotion areas for teachers in some local government areas starting from 2013.

A leader of the Edo State chapter of the NUT gave the Edo state government the last ultimatum to meet the demands of teachers in Edo state…

The teachers at a senatorial meeting comprising Edo North, Edo South and Edo central leaders of the union said they are not backing out as they proceeded on Monday with the strike which they said was indefinite.

The leaders who are worried about the effects of the strike on pupils and students of primary and secondary schools when they resume on February 1 are calling on key players in the education sector to prevail on the state government to meet with their demands which include promotion areas from 2013, unpaid entitlements, and other issues affecting teachers in the state.

Meanwhile, Edo state schools scheduled to resume for a new term on Monday 18 of January have been postponed to February 1, 2021, due to the hike in COVID-19 cases in the state.
