For weeks after the first reports of a mysterious new virus in Wuhan, people poured out of the central Chinese city, cramming onto buses, trains and airplanes as the first wave of China's great Lunar New Year migration broke across the nation. With additional 9,502 cases recorded yesterday, South Africa has now crossed the 1 million thresholds for COVID-19 cases in the country.

The South African Health Minister, Zweli MKhize disclosed that the total number of cases is now pegged at 1,004,413 with 214 death casualties, and this goes to show that the second wave is in full swing.

She also canvassed for stricter measures as the second wave of the pandemic resulted in an upward trend. South Africa has now debunked rumours that the variant in the country is more contagious and claims the new variant stems from the UK.

Five countries have also announced plans to block all flights from South Africa since the new variant was discovered. The countries include Israel, Turkey, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Switzerland.
