The Zamfara State Commissioner for Justice, Nura Zarumi, is asking the Federal and State Governments to enact laws that will punish politicians that engage the youths as political thugs, during the electioneering period.

He said the law should be backed with full scale enforcement on any politician found wanting.

The Commissioner for Justice was speaking at an event in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.

Political thuggery is one of the major problems bedevilling Nigeria’s electoral process.

Many believe that if not checked, it could undermine the conduct of credible, free, and fair elections and in turn, entrench bad governance.

For guests at the event to educate and enlighten the youths on the need to resist attempts by politicians to engage them as political thugs, explained that the reason the political class has refused to empower the youths educationally, economically, and socially to thrive, is to continue to use them as political thugs.

The Zamfara State Commissioner for Justice believes that if there is a law to safeguard and protect the youths from being used as thugs, it would help in a greater measure.

The Guest Speaker, Dr. Anas Anka, is of the opinion that one of the tricks politicians use to lure youths into political thuggery, is by denying them the right education, job opportunities, and enabling environment to harness their potentials, for the benefit of themselves and the society at large.

The general consensus at the event is for the youths to demand accountability, good governance, an enabling environment, and be determined to resist any attempt by politicians to recruit them as political thugs, to perpetrate violence during the electioneering period.
