Former Burundian President, Pierre Buyoya, has reportedly passed away to COVID-19 at age 71. A member of his family revealed the news to the AFP on Friday.

Despite frantic efforts to save his life as he was evacuated to Paris yesterday from Bamako, he gave up the ghost in the ambulance before reaching the hospital.

Buyoya from Tutsi became President in 1987 as a military president and finally stepped down in 1993 after losing to Melchoir, the first civilian president.

He, however, served again as president between 1996 to 2003.
