German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, has announced that non-essential services will be shut this Wednesday and remain so until January 10 along with schools and other centres to help stop the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to her, the nation needed to urgently address the exponential rise of the virus within the country to prevent a breakdown in the health system.

The number of Coronavirus cases in Germany currently stands at 1.35 million cases with 22,106 deaths. On Sunday alone, 20,200 cases were recorded while 321 lost their lives.

As the new lockdown goes into effect, all employees and students have been advised to continue their engagements from home, all religious and social activities will be shut down, shops and services will also remain shut until January 10.

To celebrate the yuletide with families, Merkel advised all to self-isolate for a week before visiting with families and friends.
