The Senate says over nine billion dollars, approximately 4.5 trillion naira was lost to illegal mining activities in Nigeria in just one year between 2014 and 2015.
The Senate, while debating on a motion raised by Orji Uzor Kalu from Abia state, called on the Federal Government to these activities and the smuggling of gold out of the country.
The lawmakers further urged the Federal Government to initiate efforts aimed at tapping into the abundant solid minerals resources in the country and ensuring they serve as a veritable diversification option for the nation’s economy.
