A federal high court in Kano has discharged and acquitted former minister of foreign affairs Aminu Wali and Mansur Ahmed accused by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of receiving 950 million Naira 2015 election campaign funds without passing through a financial institution.
Justice Lewis Allagoa averred that the prosecution though established that the money 950 million was received beyond the threshold allowed by law, It failed to establish the money was received outside a financial institution.
The EFCC arraigned Aminu Wali and Mansur Ahmed on 3 count charges of receiving cash payment of 950 million Naira on 27th march 2015 contrary to money laundering prohibition act 2011.
Delivering his judgement justice Lewis Allagoa agrees that the prosecution has proven that the defendants did receive the money.
The judge, however, holds that the prosecution has. Failed to establish that the money did not pass through a financial institution, an ingredient of proving the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
The judge consequently discharged and acquitted the defendants on all the charges. Aminu Wali said the judgement has vindicated him.
The trial lasted for over 2 years.
