The National Agency for the Control of Aids, NACA, has stated that between the year 2005 and 2019, there has been a 40 per cent increase in HIV infections among adolescents and young persons globally.

The agency, who shared the statistic during an event to mark this year’s ‘World Aids Day’, also noted that the figure represents the highest single increase in new infections among adolescents, with most of its demography coming from sub-Saharan Africa.

The agency, however, added that Nigeria, which is one of five countries that accounts for over 50 per cent of HIV infections among adolescents globally, needs to do more towards ensuring that factors which expose adolescents to the virus are tackled.
