The Times of London has reported that the British Government has set a September 2021 deadline to ban the installation of Huawei 5G equipment in Telecommunication networks.

Huawei was granted a license to supply the less-sensitive parts of the United Kingdom’s 5G network, however, conservatives rebelled against the move and introduced an amendment to the Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill on broadband access which allowed for Huawei to operate until December 2022

The new Telecommunications Security Bill has however shortened the deadline and introduced stiffer penalties for non-compliance.

Huawei’s Vice President, Victor Zhang has responded stating that the move is politically motivated and not based on a detailed security risk assessment and predicted the move will slow down the digitization process in the United Kingdom.

Members of the British Parliament will debate its second reading today.
