Nouakchott, MAURITANIA: Former minister and Mauritanian Presidential candidate Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi raises his hand 12 March 2007 during a press conference in Nouakchott. Abdallahi obtained 24.79 percent of the ballots cast yesterday, ahead of veteran opposition politician Ahmed Ould Daddah, who garnered 20.68 percent, officials said. The two leading presidential candidates will meet again in a run-off on March 25, the interior ministry said today on the basis of complete results from the weekend's first-round vote. Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi called for, "the widest consensus possible" between political parties in order to solve the country's problems. The first democratically elected President of Mauritania, Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi has passed away as confirmed by representatives from the President’s Office.

Abdallahi was admitted at a private hospital in Nouakchott after some heart complications before his admission.

Mauritania has now declared three days of mourning after his death.
