Award winning writer , Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been declared the winner of Women’s Prize For Fiction “Winner of Winners” award for her Biafran war inspired novel, Half of a Yellow Sun.

This award comes 13 years after she received the Women’s Fiction Prize. . Adichie novels was voted over the works of other nominees like Rose Tremain, Maggie O’Farrell, Andrea Levy and Zadie Smith.

The one-off prize was judged by members of the public to mark the 25th anniversary of the award and Out of the 25 winners, they were asked to name their favourite authors. Chimamanda Adichie novel, Half of a Yellow Sun, captures the lives of several Nigerians involved in Nigeria’s civil war, which occurred in the late 1960s.

Other contending titles include English novelist, Zadie Smith’s ‘On Beauty’ and American author and journalist, Lionel shiver’s – We Need to Talk About Kevin. According to the Prize, over 8,500 people voted.

In 2017, Adichie won the Women’s prize for her second novel at the age of 29. In 2007, Muriel Gray, Scottish author and journalist decided the novel Half of a Yellow Sun as astonishing, not just based on the subject matter, but in the brilliance involving its accessibility.

Founder of the Women Prize award in 1991, Kate Mosse, admitted that she is thrilled that Adichie won the award as this is sure proof that a great book last beyond its time. Moss further described the book as one that speaks to everyone, no matter who you are and not many books do that.

Adichie novels speak on Female empowerment, colonialism, race, class and ethnic allegiances, but it’s beautifully told, that you as a reader find yourself rooting for characters in the book and at the end that’s history.
