The Judicial Panel of Inquiry set up by the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, to investigate abuses by the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, has begun its sitting at the FCT High Court.
The Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Tony Ojukwu, said among several recommendations, 33 officers have been listed for prosecution while 35 recommended for dismissal.
The dissolution of the SARS is a fallout of the protest by angry youths under the aegis of #Endsars which has now necessitated the establishment of Judicial Panels of Inquiry across the federation.
Chairman of the panel, Justice Suleiman Galadima, revealed that a total of 148 petitions have been received so far. And whoever feels like withdrawing his or her petition is free to do so.
Justice Hussein Baba Yusuf of the FCT High Court is certain that the committee will no doubt at the end of the sitting come up with good reports.
The Solicitor General of the Federation, Dayo Apata, on his part, assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is putting in place a process of implementing the recommendations by the panels.
The first two petitions heard after the inauguration is that of Bello Akubuokwu who alleged threat to his life and that of Francis Ogbaji over his arbitrary detention, torture, and inhuman treatment by the men of the defunct SARS.
