An election monitoring group, Yiaga Africa, has called on political actors and their supporters to show maturity with the outcome of Saturday’s Ondo governorship election to maintain peace in the state.
Speaking to reporters after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced the winner, the group urged the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s candidate, Eyitayo Jegede, to join hands and work with the re-elected All Progressives Congress, APC Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.
Yiaga Africa said going by the significant rate of procedural infractions around counting of spoilt and counterfoil ballot paper, the INEC needs to consider a better training for its Adhoc officials for the infractions not to again undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
It also called on the INEC to conduct a post-election audit on both Edo and Ondo States governorship elections in order to enable the Commission to access its performance, identify operational areas for improvement, as well as to drive policy reforms to effectively plan for future elections.
The groups commended the electoral umpire for its efforts to comply with the covid-19 protocol with respect to providing disinfectants and hand sanitizers at polling units during the electoral exercise.
