The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Vice Presidential candidate in the 2019 Nigerian general elections, Peter Obi, has raised the alarm that the country’s education system is at the brink of collapse.

Obi was speaking at the 60th Founder’s Day of the University of Nigeria, UNN, Nsukka, in Enugu State, southeast Nigeria.

The former Governor of Anambra State was the guest speaker at the 60th Founder’s day lecture series of the UNN.

Obi warned of the consequences of the increasing crisis in the country’s education sector, explaining that a holistic approach is needed to regain its lost glory.

Speaking on the topic, “60th Anniversary of Nigeria: The Journey So Far”, Obi observed that from 1999 to the year 2020, the country has recorded the highest number of people leaving in extreme poverty as well as the highest number of dropped out of schools children, globally.

While calling for massive investments in the education system, the former governor also wants what he called the total overhauling of the country’s expenditure in the education sector.

He described Nigeria’s current economic situation as the worst in the world with the highest unemployment rate.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Charles Igwe, and other guests at the event reacted to the issues raised in the lecture.

The programme was attended by prominent personalities, academia, captains of industry among others.
