Helen Reddy, Australian composer behind the feminist anthem ‘I am a Woman‘ dies at 78. In a statement released by her family on Facebook, it was confirmed that Reddy died in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Her children Jordan Sommers and Traci Donat described their mother as a wonderful and a truly formidable woman. Reddy was diagnosed with dementia in 2015 and she spent her last years in a celebrity care home in Los Angeles.

She started her career at the age of 4, she sang on television and radio stations and won her first award on a television program called Bandstand.

She later moved to Chicago to pursue her singing career, where she released her single ‘i believe in love ‘ and ‘One Way Ticket’.

Reddy was regarded as the Queen of pop in 1970 after reigning as the top-selling female between 1973-1974.

Her biggest hit was 1971 ‘I am a woman‘ this also earned her the title as a Feminist Icon as the song became the anthem often used for women movement and it’s still being quoted till date.

In 1973, she caused quite a stir when collecting her award for best female vocalist she said: she thanks God because SHE makes everything possible.
