After missing out in the just-concluded US Open, Japan’s Kei Nishikori quickly regained momentum, after surrendering his first two sets to Britain’s Dan Evans on Sunday, to win the five sets thriller first-round game in France.

The Japanese, who is playing in his fifth match of the year, following an elbow surgery at the start of the year, and a coronavirus positive test before the start of the US Open, rallied back the defeat the Briton 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(3), 1-6, 6-4 in five sets.

Nishikori, who has only lost 6 of his 30 five-set matches in a Grand Slam tournament, will play Stefano Travaglia in the second round on Wednesday.
