Some celebrities such as Katy Perry, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jamie Foxx, Mark Ruffalo and Michael B Jordan have taken a stand against Hate Speech on Social Media.
Mark Zuckerberg suffered the most hit as he reportedly lost close to $10 million within 30 minutes after Kim Kardashian made the announcement to boycott both Instagram and Facebook.
They all joined hands with the US civil rights group Stop Hate for Profit that issued Facebook series of demands which went unattended to by the platform such as committing at least 5% of its annual revenue towards an independent anti-racism fund and make stricter rules to combat voting misinformation and violence
This will not be the first time Facebook is getting this kind of feedback, last month, close to 1000 companies boycotted the app including large advertisers like Procter & Gamble but unsuccessfully because Zuckerberg finally disclosed that big spenders only account for 16% of its total revenue and as such was a futile effort.
Also, ever so recently an employee quit the company citing claims that she felt she had blood on her hands due to the Company’s way of turning a blind eye to authoritarian politicians across developing countries.
Kim Kardashian has at least 144 million followers on Facebook and another 188.8 million followers on Instagram.
