YouTube recently announced plans to test a beta version of YouTube Shorts, an app with TikTok like features in India. It appears YouTube is looking to absorb the large user base TikTok left behind.

India formerly banned the app after rising tensions between the two Asian countries that began in June. There were also news of abuse and suicide surrounding the use of the app.

India used to be the largest market for the app with close to 120 million users. YouTube Shorts as described by Chris Jaffe, YouTube’s vice president features a multi-segment camera and can add multiple videos together. The app will also give users options to record music from an array of song libraries.

Since TikTok’s rise to fame, it has faced multiple obstacles in its path due to its Chinese-Origins and multiple technology giants such as Facebook Reels and now YouTube Shorts have capitalized on its challenges to break its landmark on the social video creation market.

Today marks the 45-day Ultimatum given to TikTok to liquidate its assets in the United States due to National Security Concerns as touted by President Trump. Read more about it here.
