Naomi Osaka has emerged victorious after what we would call an unlikely comeback against Victoria Azarenka in the US Open Finals that occurred yesterday.

Azarenka swept past the first set in under 30 minutes and it appeared as if she was going to win again as she did in the semi-finals with Serena Williams. Azarenka was 2-0 up in the second set until Osaka changed the tide of things that heralded her victory in a 1-6 6-3 6-3 set.

The win places Osaka as the reigning Champion at the US Open and makes it her third Grand Slam ever, the second at the US Open. When asked how she managed to turn the game around, the 22-year old responded as below

“I just thought it would be very embarrassing to lose in under an hour so I just have to try and stop having a really bad attitude.”

Osaka who throughout this year’s US Open honoured black people who have been unjustly killed in the United States including Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, George Floyd, Philando Castile, Elijah McClain, Ahmaud Arbery and Tamir Rice to make people start talking, earned an additional £2.3 million despite being the highest-earning female athlete in the world.
