The Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change and that of the House of Representatives Committee on Climate Change have called on the hydrocarbon pollution remediation project hyprep to fastrack the completion of the Ogoni land cleanup.
They made the call during a visit to Ogoni cleanup sites where remediation work is ongoing.
The Senate Committee on Climate Change and Ecology and the House Committee on Climate Change, who were accompanied by the hydrocarbon pollution remediation project hyprep officials, civil society organisations, and environmental rights activists, after an assessment tour of various remediation sites in Ogoni land, said although work was ongoing, there was an urgent need for speedy implementation of the project.
The hyprep boss, Marvin Dekil, disclosed that out of the 21 sites handed over to contractors for remediation, seven sites have been completed.
On his part, the Coordinator, Environmental Rights Action Friends of the Earth, Godwin Ojo, underscored the need to improve the lives and means of livelihood of the people.
