French professional tennis player and 17th seeded Benoit Paire has been withdrawn from the US Open, after testing positive to coronavirus. The announcement was made on Sunday, the eve of the tournament.

Paire will now isolate for 10 days and has been replaced by Spain’s Marcel Granollers. The French professional was scheduled to face Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak in the first round on Tuesday, with the Polish international now listed to play Granollers.

While speaking in an interview shortly after the announcement, British number one Johanna Konta said it was shocking that a player had tested positive inside the US Open bubble.

She said they have had positive tests, but this time it is different, as it had happened inside the bubble, which makes it terrifying. The British number one will play fellow Briton Heather Watson on Tuesday, in the first round of the women’s category.
