An anti-fraud platform, Secure-D has revealed after an investigation that a Malware, Triada is known for signing users automatically to subscription services without their consent was discovered on Tecno W2 pre-installed phones distributed across multiple African countries.
The malware, Triada installs a code- xHelper into a compromised device and subscribes them to services that consume pre-paid airtime, a popular way to pay for many digital services and products
The over 200,000 devices from the countries – Ethiopia, Ghana, Cameroon and South Africa made approximately 19.2 million suspicious transactions between March of 2019 till date.
Transson Holdings, the makers of Infinix, Tecno and Itel currently holds a whopping 41% share of the smartphone market based on information from IDC and also owns the largest market share on the continent. Though Transson Holdings carved a niche for itself by appealing to an African audience through Research and development – a feat which it prides itself, news of this vulnerability has been blamed on an unidentified vendor in the supply chain process by the company.
Tecno Mobile also maintains that a fix for the issue had been made available to its users since March 2018.
