Serena Williams was knocked out of the Cincinnati Open in the third round by Greek Maria Sakkari on Tuesday night. The thirteenth seed trailed by a set, before conquering the 23 grand slams champion, the 25-year-old will now play Johanna Konta in the next round.

Serena, who will chase her seventh US Open Singles Title said it was a tough match, she should have won as she had opportunities, and there was no excuse for her defeat.

The Western and Southern Open, which the 38-year-old has won twice, was moved to Flushing Meadows New York, from Cincinnati to create a two-tournament safety bubble that also incorporates the US Open, which starts on August 31st.

Williams, who had earlier lost in the Lexington open this month, to world number 116 Shelby Rogers, will be bidding a record-equalling Margaret Court’s 24th Grand Slam singles title at the US Open.
