President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday rose in support of the agitation over delay in dispensing with suits at the courts across Nigeria.

He advocated that hearing of criminal cases from the high court to the supreme court should be pegged at 13 months time limit while civil cases should be concluded within fifteen months.

President Buhari represented by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was speaking at the 60th Annual general conference of the Nigerian Bar Association theme ” Step forward”

President Buhari is worried over conflicting court orders by judges in recent times.

For too long, courts with the same status across the country are reputed to give conflicting orders or make conflicting orders on the same issues.

The President feels this development should lead to reforms in the judiciary.

Another issue raised by the President is the controversies surrounding the appointment of judges and justices in Nigeria.

The issue of executive orders in a democratic dispensation dominated discussions in one of the sessions at the conference.

Notable legal practitioners voiced out their concerns over the legality of the executive orders and the possibility of its abuse.

Other issues thrown up at the conference include the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on workers welfare, insolvency and government economic recovery plan.

In its over a century history, this is the first time the Nigerian Bar Association annual conference was held virtually.
