2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu has withdrawn from this year’s grand slam tournament, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which has disrupted her return from injury.

The young Canadian has not featured in any tournament since sustaining an injury at the WTA Finals in October last year.

In a statement, the youngster who beat Serena Williams in last year’s final said she made the difficult decision not to return to New York this year, as she has taken the step to focus on match fitness to ensure that she returns to play at the highest level of tennis.

The number 6 ranked player in the world becomes the fourth women’s top 20 players to pull out of the US Open after world number one Ashleigh Barty, Kiki Bertens, and Elina Svitolina confirmed their withdrawal.

The US Open is scheduled to be held behind closed doors in Flushing Meadows New York.
