A new Sexual Intercourse Related Crimes Bill that would see young children being given off in marriage as long as their family gives their consent is being considered.
As of today, 45% of young women in Somalia are already married by the age of 18 and this new bill would be a major setback in the fight against sexual violence in Somalia and across the globe.
The U.N mission to Somalia released a statement urged the parliament to re-introduce the original one as the current one was “deeply flawed”
The UNPFA reported last month that within the last month there has been an increase in gender-based violence since the pandemic began.
