France’s Fiona Ferro and world number 53 became the first WTA champion since tennis was halted in mid-march, as she defeated fourth-seeded Estonian professional Anett Kontaveit in straight sets to win the first tour-level tennis title in five months at the Palermo Open in Italy.
In a statement, the 23-year old said, it was her best game of the week, after landing the second title of her career with a dominant display.
Several exhibition tourneys have been held globally, but the Palermo Open became the first official event for the WTA and ATP held since March because of the global pandemic.
It is the 23-year old’s second-ever WTA Tour title after her Swiss Open win in 2019. Social distancing protocols were strictly observed, including a limited number of fans, as there were no handshakes between players after the match.
