About 2732 people were killed between the months of April to June 2020 in 33 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
This information was disclosed by a research firm based in Lagos, Nigeria.
The research firm named SBM Intelligence exposed the violent killings of people in the country which includes; Boko Haram attacks, armed herders, kidnappers, militia, communal clashes, etc.
The research project was a collaboration between SBM intelligence and another Civil Society Organisation named “Enough-is-Enough Nigeria.”
The organisation had previously reported the killings in the country between the months of January to March 2020. Within that period, about 1000 people were killed in Nigeria.
According to the organisation, the report utilised security trackers such as Nigeria Security Tracker-Council on Foreign Relations the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), and also locally generated reports.
The results from these various sources were used to estimate the number of people being killed in Nigeria.
The SBM intelligence said that the violence in the country continues and the government and security forces failed to respond accordingly.
With the economic meltdown caused by the pandemic, the unemployment rate has increased drastically to about 43% which could create a surge in violence and killings.
