The United States Tennis Association, USTA, has said the canceled Washington Open which had been scheduled to start on August 13, will not have an impact of the US Open scheduled for next month.

In June, the WTA and the ATP announced that tennis would be returning in August behind closed doors, as a result of the uncertainties caused by the global pandemic.

Organizers said the Cincinnati Open and the US Open will go ahead as planned back to back from August 20.

In a statement, the USTA said the decision to stage the event was based on health guidelines put in place by medical experts after careful observation, and consideration, for the interest of sports and financial viability.

The ATP and WTA had tours suspended in March following the outbreak, and the WTA is set to resume on August 3 with the Palermo Open, marking a return to top tennis.

Mark Ein chairman of Washington open said unresolved issues relating to international travel restrictions as well as health and safety trends forced the cancellation of the event.

The US Open will be the second major grand slam tennis tournament since the Australian Open in January.
