Malawi Minister for Energy, Newton Kambala, has disclosed that the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi, ESCOM, has been heavily crippled by the high level of corruption and debt in the country and the company is now failing to provide adequate and efficient electricity to Malawians.
Kambala revealed this information on Tuesday, as he toured the ESCOM’s national control center in Blantyre.
The Minister also disclosed that the ESCOM has failed to make any profit and has instead, accumulated a toxic amount of loans of about K40 billion (approx. $54 million).
He also disclosed that the ESCOM’s stifled growth and operations has a lot to do with the high level of corruption in the corporation.
