Thulaganyo Segokgo, the Botswana Minister of Transport and Communications, has disclosed that they needed robust rail infrastructure to support the evacuation of coal to international markets where demand is high, mostly in Asia.
The Minister said this while speaking at the launch of the Minergy Coal/Botswana Railways Masama Coal Mine.
Segokgo also said that Botswana had vast coal reserves in excess of about 200 billion tonnes and as Botswana is a landlocked country, supporting rail infrastructure is necessary to efficiently deliver coal to the ports.
He said that Botswana’s strategic geographic location is at the centre of Southern Africa, the country, therefore, needs adequate physical and financial infrastructure for the country’s growth and competitiveness.
