Serena Williams will be returning to action next month as a top seed at a new hardcourt tournament in Kentucky, which will be the 23 grand slam singles champion’s first time in a tournament, since representing the United States in February at the federations cup.

International tennis was put on hold, as a result of the pandemic. Earlier in June, the ATP and WTA announced that professional tennis will resume in August.

Organizers of the Kentucky tournament, which is also referred to as the top seed Open, announced that 2017 U.S Open champion Sloane Stephens will be on board, alongside Serena Williams when play resumes on August 10.

Williams has already declared her intentions to take part in this year’s U.S Open in chase of a 24 grand slam single’s title, despite other tennis stars, criticizing the government’s decision to host the event.

The US Open has been scheduled to hold behind closed doors, as a precaution, following COVID-19 guidelines.

The tournament will be done in its traditional form, with 128 players and will feature the men and women’s singles’ draw events respectively, while also featuring the men and women’s doubles, with 32 teams in each competition.
