Upon the return of Premier Football on June 17, Watford has received a boost to their relegation battle as the club captain, Troy Deeney, is set to return to training after speaking with UK government health official while Adrian Mariappa returns to training after seven-day isolation period.
Last week, Watford defender Adrian Mariappa confirmed via social media that he was one of the individuals who tested positive to covid19 after mass testing was done by the Premier League.
Mariappa and Burnley coach Ian Woan were the only two individuals who tested positive after last week’s tests.
Mariappa then went into compulsory self-isolation for seven days.
He took another test between Monday and Tuesday, he tested negative and was given clearance to resume group training sessions.
After the Premier League announced that group training sessions can commence, Troy Deeney came out to state that he will not be resuming training with his team.
The striker made it clear that he will not want to risk the life of his 5-month old son who already has existing respiratory issues.
Deeney was slammed by football fans and critics worldwide.
In an interview, Deeney said that he was willing to suffer the consequences of not resuming training.
He further stated that the safety of his family is his only concern at the moment.
However, after a meeting with a UK government health official yesterday, Deeney is now considering a return to training and is currently in talks with the Watford coaching staff and medical team. His return to action would aid Watford in their relegation battle.
The absence of fans during home games will certainly affect Watford but with their best players on the pitch, being led by their captain, they will be optimistic about their chances of survival.
