Two hundred and ninety-four inmates have been released from custody in Kano.

They were freed on the orders of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, in the spirit of the Eid El Fitr celebration and in line with the presidential directives on the decongestion of correctional centers, over coronavirus pandemic.

Ganduje said it is his tradition to release inmates during Sallah, as a deliberate attempt to decongest the facility.

The released inmates were given 5,000 Naira each, as transport fare to return home.

In the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak, President Buhari had asked state governors to exercise their prerogative of mercy, to decongest the custodial facilities, across the country.
