COVID-19 Updates in Africa: Robots come to Uganda’s aid, South Africa reopens schools

The Rwandan government has launched the use of robots to assist healthcare workers in the battle against the COVID 19 virus.

The robot was introduced yesterday 19th of May, into the system to reduce the contact between the healthcare workers and the patients at the Kanyima COVID 19 Treatment Centre by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.

The robots can perform a number of tasks such as delivering food and medications to patients, temperature screening, detecting people who are not wearing face masks, etc.

Despite being the nation with the highest number of confirmed cases of the COVID 19 virus, South Africa is moving to reopen schools. For grade 7 and 12 pupils, school would resume on the 1st of June.

South Africa has confirmed 17,200 cases of the virus and has recorded 312 deaths.

According to Angie Motshekga, the Minister of Education, other grades will be able to attend lessons in smaller schools under strict social distancing measures. Bigger schools will be opened at a later unknown date.

On Tuesday, Egypt confirmed the highest daily cases of the COVID 19 virus. 720 new cases were confirmed within the 24-hour span.

So far since the outbreak was first discovered in the country, Egypt has confirmed a total of 13,484 cases of the virus and has recorded 659 deaths.

Luanda, Angola’s capital has started distributing soap for free to encourage residents to wash their hands more in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

Over 40,000 bars have already been distributed to people around the city, most especially to the financially vulnerable areas and families.

This project was started by Fernanda Renee, an Angolan soapmaker who began making soaps about 4 years ago.

The goal is to make no less than 70,000 soaps for distribution to the vulnerable.
The German government has pledged to assist Kenya in their fight against the COVID 19 virus.

According to the German embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, the German government will assist in providing the resources and expertise needed to battle the virus.

The assistance will also increase the testing capabilities in Kenya for the COVID 19 virus. So far Kenya has confirmed 963 cases of the COVID 19 virus and has recorded 50 deaths.
