After the Ligue 1 season had been cancelled due to the French government announcing that all sports activities will be suspended till September, the French Football Federation in collaboration with the Professional Football League (LPF) decided to award Paris Saint-Germain with the league title.
Also, other season ramifications were invoked as Marseille and Rennes earned the Champions League qualification spots, Lille, Reims and Nice got the Europa League spots while FC Lorient and RC Lens were promoted from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1 as Amiens and Toulouse were hit with relegation woes. All that was left was the player recognitions for individual awards.
The Ligue 1 decided to award PSG forward Kylian Mbappe the golden boot award. Mbappe shared the top spot with AS Monaco striker Wissam Ben Yedder as the pair had 18 goals each.
However, Mbappe was given the award by Ligue 1 because all his goals were from open play while three of Ben Yedder’s goals were conversions from penalties.
After being awarded the accolade, Mbappe went on social media to congratulate his international teammate and expressed his desire for Ben Yedder to also be given a trophy.
Mbappe cited the decision that was made by the Premier League last season as they awarded Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the Liverpool duo of Sadio Mane and Mohammed Salah.
The trio scored 22 goals each and shared the honour of being top goal scorer for the season. Mbappe feels that the same should apply to him and Ben Yedder.
