zimbabwe signs $3 billion thermal plant deal with china

A Chinese construction company China Gezhouba Group Corp Limited has pledged to help Zimbabwe’s Rio Energy Limited build a 2100 megawatt thermal power plant in Sengwa, the northern region of Zimbabwe at an estimated cost of $3 billion.

The chairman of Rio Energy Limited, Caleb Dengu, announced last week that the China Gezhouba Group Company Corp will assist with the fundraising for the project and also help with its development.

The power plant is estimated to bring in a total capacity of 2800 megawatts and will be constructed in four phases, its phase will consist of about 700 megawatts each.

Caleb Dengu said that Sengwa had enough coal reserves to support a 10000-megawatt plant. A 420-kilovolt ampere Powerline and a 155-mile long pipeline that will carry water all the way from lake Kariba to Sengwa will be built by the Chinese construction company.

The first phase of the project is estimated to cost about $1.2 billion.
