The Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice Kate Abiri, has approved the setting up of a mobile court to prosecute COVID-19 lockdown offenders.
Four magistrates are to preside over the courts which will run two shifts daily.
The mobile court is to commence sitting on April 27, at the Swali Ultra Modern Market in Yenagoa, the state’s capital.
The move, according to the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Information Bayelsa State, Freston Akpor, is to prevent an outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
Violators of the various sanctions, particularly traders at the market, Akpor said, would be put on trial upon their arrest by officials of the Environmental Sanitation Authority and Ministry of Environment in conjunction with law enforcement personnel.
Accordimg to him, offenders would be liable to penalties including community service, fines, or both.
