Tanzanian leader says country cannot afford a lockdown

According to John Magufuli, the president of Tanzania, the country cannot afford to issue a lockdown to curb the spread of the COVID 19 virus in the country despite the increase in the number of confirmed cases.

He said that although people have advised to lock down the major cities, they cannot. Majorly Dar es Salaam, because the city is the main Port City and it brings in about 80% of the Government’s revenue.

The president asked International financial corporations to forgive the debts of African nations instead of giving out new loans to battle the COVID 19 virus.

Tanzania discovered its first case of the COVID 19 virus on the 16th of March and in the last 5 weeks, the number of confirmed cases of the has risen the 284 and the country has recorded a total of 10 deaths so far.
