Adamawa State Government has concluded preparations to free 171 inmates.
The action is coming on the heels of the government’s directive to decongest Nigerian Correctional Centres across the country, to contain the spread of COVID-19.
A total of 217 inmates would be pardoned across the 17 correctional centres in the state.
Out of these, 46 inmates would be granted amnesty, while 171 inmates are to benefit from the list of the 2, 600 beneficiaries of the presidential pardon as announced on the April 9, 2020.
According to the Adamawa State Correctional Service Controller, Umar Audu, the inmates to be pardoned are the aged, those with health challenges, inmates jailed for three years but have less than six months to serve, and inmates sentenced with option of fine but not exceeding 50, 000 Naira.
On how far the state government has gone on the release of the inmates, the Commissioner for Justice, Afraimu Jingi, said all documentations have been concluded.
The last stage is for the committee to obtain Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s signature.
The State Controller also said that the Adamawa state Correctional Service is experiencing the challenge of congestion in the urban areas.
