Yesterday, Tuesday 14th of April, Donald Trump, the president of the United States announced that he has instructed his administration towards cutting off the World Health Organisation funding while reviews are being conducted and as such, the United States would find other ways to work with other nations to achieve public health goals.
This decision was supposedly made by the president because of the World Health Organisation lack proper information at the beginning of the pandemic outbreak. President Trump said that the World Health Organisation has severely mismanaged and covered up the spread of the COVID 19 virus and he had deep concerns whether America’s funding was put to its best use possible.
He said that the world Health Organisation adequately failed to collect and share the proper information about the COVID 19 virus in a timely and transparent fashion. The United States of America is one of the leading sponsors of the World Health Organisation.
According to President Trump, the United States has contributed about $400 million to help fight the pandemic well other countries like China have only contributed almost $40 million.
Just last week, President Trump threatened to cut off US funding from the World Health Organisation because the World Health Organisation failed in their duty to protect the world from the pandemic. Although, the WHO sent out multiple alerts about the COVID 19 virus earlier this year. In January, the organization declared the COVID 19 virus as a global health emergency.
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had earlier replied to the threat saying that the politician should not make the COVID 19 virus a political issue because it’s about “National Unity” and the politicians should be more concerned about the welfare of the people.
About 2 million cases of the COVID 19 virus has been confirmed worldwide with about 125,000 recorded deaths. The United States of America has confirmed about 600,000 cases of the COVID 19 virus and has recorded about 26,000 deaths. New York state is the highest at about 200,000 confirmed cases and over 10,000 deaths.
