Colonel Hameed Ali, the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), approved the release of food items worth 3.2 billion Naira for distribution to vulnerable citizens as the nation fights COVID-19. These food items include; 46,000 metric tons of rice, 36,495 kegs of vegetable oil to mention a few. This was confirmed by Joseph Attah, Nigeria Customs’ Public Relations Officer in a statement on Tuesday at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

According to Joseph Attah, the relief items to be distributed are in support of the Federal government’s effort to reduce the suffering of vulnerable citizens during this compulsory lockdown. 136,705 cartoons of tomato paste, 828 bales of the wrapper, 2,300 rolls of lace fabric, 2951 cartons of spaghetti and 1253 packets of noodles will also be distributed as confirmed by Attah.

According to him, only items certified by NAFDAC would be released to be shared with the public. As a responsible agent of the government, Customs are appreciated being able to support the federal government during these trying times and also made known that they continue to maintain all extant laws governing overtime and seized cargos.

Richard Mofe Damijo had in a social media message appealed to the government to help reduce the effect of the pandemic by sharing seized food items to the populace. Read below
