oil tanker destroys 3 classrooms in onitsha

On Saturday Evening around 6:00 pm, an un-purified tanker heavily loaded with oil ran into the building of New Bethel primary school Onitsha destroying and tearing down the walls of three classrooms.

According to Mr Edwin Okadigbo, spokesperson of the Anambra State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) the oil-laden tanker ran into the classroom because its break had failed. However, since it was on a Saturday, the pupils were not in the classroom.

There was no recorded death following the accident. Just destroyed classroom building and oil spilling into the classrooms. A call was put through to the NSCDC Onitsha North Divisional Officers to report the accident. Under the leadership of DO, SC Ike Ejike, the NSCDC arrived at the scene and contacted the state Fire Service which promptly arrived at the scene also.

A resident living around New Bethel Primary school expressed concern over the incident. If it had not happened over the weekend, it would have been so fatal as the lives of children would have been lost to the accident. The oil-laden Mack truck that ran into the building had no number plate registration.
