The distasteful practice of female genital mutilation is still a widely practised in various regions in Nigeria and other parts of the world despite the fact that people are more educated now on the subject and it is frowned against internationally.

A recent investigation by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) showed that about 19.9 million Nigerian girls still go through genital mutilation even though the former president of Nigeria, Ebele Goodluck Jonathan signed a federal law banning the act in May 2015.

Female Genital Mutilation involves total removal of the partial removal of the external female genitalia. The study of the practice shows no health benefit of the practice, it has only proven to be harmful to women, it has been known to cause maternal death, menstruation problem, infertility, infections, difficulty urinating, severe bleeding, death, among many others.

According to UNICEF studies, over 200 million women in Africa and the Middle East are victims of Female genital mutilation today.
