Togo’s President has recently won his fourth presidential term against Agbeyome Kodjo earlier today. According to the National Electoral Commission, Gnassingbe led by 72% votes.

The opposition had previously declared a landslide victory and also made accusations of election fraud. Read his statements below

“Considering the revelations of fraud which marked this ballot, it is impossible for the outgoing candidate to be elected in the first round,” he told journalists on Saturday when 60% of votes had been counted.

“I have the conviction that in the coming week, I will lead this country,” he had said.

Gnassingbe has served as President of Togo since 2005 taking over from his father, Eyadema. The recent constitutional reforms will allow for Gnassingbe to serve as president until 2030.
