Kwabena Duffuor, Former Ghana Finance Minister, facing embezzlement charges

The former finance minister of Ghana Kwabena Duffuor has been charged with embezzlement and money laundering among other criminal charges.

Kwabena Duffuor has been accused of receiving the sum of 663.3million cedis, equivalent of $122 million with the full knowledge that the money had been illegally obtained.

He’s also being blamed for the collapse of the Ghanaian banking industry because of his poor leadership, negligence and corruption. The Central Bank of Ghana finally stepped in in August 2017 and gave the industry a bailout of 12.5billion cedis.

Kwabena Duffuor was the founder of Unibank, Ghana. The bank was established when he was the governor of the Bank of Ghana. He was the governor of the Bank of Ghana from 1997 to 2001 before he became the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning from 2009 to 2013.

Duffuor’s net worth is estimated to be about $680 million and he is ranked as the 24th most influential person in Ghana.
