A Malawian Constitutional Court has nullified the result of the last presidential election in Malawi due to “widespread, systematic and grave” irregularities to the outcome.
The election results were challenged by the two opposition parties who were closely trailing Mutharika over irregularities affecting as many as 1.4 million votes.
The Judge, Healey Potani ruled as follows
“We consider that” Peter Mutharika “was not duly elected on 21 May 2019. We, therefore, annul the results of the presidential election,”
He also ordered a rerun within a 150 day period.
Although the ruling can be appealed, it is not yet clear what Peter Mutharika’s camp will do.
