China postpones 2020 Football Season due to Coronavirus Outbreak

With an estimated 7,700 cases of people infected with Coronavirus and the death toll now at a whopping 170, China has postponed all domestic matches and more importantly, the Chinese Super League (CSL).

The League was initially scheduled for February 22 but this won’t hold so as to enhance the prevention and control of the coronavirus. This was released in a Chinese Football Association Statement.

China’s Women’s Football team originally also was supposed to have the Olympic qualifying competition in Wuhan China but ended up being quarantined in Brisbane a hotel in Australia.

On Wednesday, January 26 it was announced by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) that the four Chinese clubs’ first three fixtures in the continent’s champions’ league group for February and March would be held in a distant place away from China. This decision by AFC also was made to prevent the spread and contact of the virus with thousands of people.

Later dates would be set for international fixtures that have been moved.

On March 26, China was expected to host the Maldives in a World cup qualifying match. However, due to the unfortunate event sweeping China, It is likely that this won’t be possible.

Other sports like the Federal Cup’s Asia/Oceania Group 1 event has been moved by the International Tennis Federation to February 4-8 in Kazakhstan. The Asian indoor athletics championships scheduled to hold in Hangzhou the capital of China’s Zhejiang province has also been cancelled.
